I had stood at this spot since the very break of day - which is early in northern Scotland in May - listening to the sound of wading birds on the shoreline and the call of cuckoos in the woodlands across the kyle towards Ben Loyal.
Gradually the sky became lighter and as the sun eventually rose, a patch of overhead cloud suddenly flushed pink, its reflection partially caught in the channel of water that winds its way across the sands at low tide.
